Celebrating
Mr. Russell Sherman's 90th birthday
“I am greatly honored to play on the Chinese Performing Arts
Foundation’s concert series specially celebrating Russell
Sherman’s 90th birthday. As a student of Wha Kyung Byun, Mr.
Sherman’s “eternal student” and wife of 46 years, I take the
liberty (perhaps presumptuously) to consider myself a part of
his wonderful musical lineage which, through 5 or 6 generations,
makes its way back to Ludwig van Beethoven.
Since I came to Boston in 2014, I’ve attended 5 of Mr. Sherman’s
live concerts, all of which had a tremendous impact on me.
What’s amazing about his playing is how he truly brings meaning
and life to each line, each note coming off the printed page
through his searches and discoveries. Sometimes he performed
works that I had been studying at the time, and he unearthed
things I hadn’t imagined could exist, and I would leave the
concert stupefied by the mysteries that he unveiled to me
onstage.
Listening to Russell Sherman opens my ears, heart and
imagination to the musical universe. He gives me inspiration,
curiosity, and hope — things which are all desperately needed
now, maybe more
