Musical Intelligencer commended Yazhi Guo, Leo Blanco,
and Chi Wei Lo in his review Yazhi Guo's
Formidable Reach. He considered it "an interested
turnout of mixed Chinese instruments with classical and
jazz pianists. Guo who held in esteem in his country,
should find such recognition and honor far beyond."
The reviewer recognized Guo's suona: "stunning
brightness with a surprising immediacy, turn to
nostalgic sweetness" "The double-reed horn, tuned
outside of its traditional ways by Guo’s engineering
ingenuity, accommodated a greater range of pitches
allowing a rare contemporary expression."
For classical pianist/improviser Lo, "His pianism,
always alert and colorful, roamed the black keys of the
instrument attaining a Chinese loveliness and grandeur
reminiscent of Debussy." And Blanco: "Emotionally
explosive, the Guo-Blanco hot duo encouraged pulsing
claps from around Jordan Hall."

Yazhi
Guo, received his Artistic Diploma from Berklee College
of Music 2015, is widely known as "THE" best Suona
player in Asia. He graduated from Beijing Central Conservatory
of Music, and was invited to stay on as an instructor for
the next nine years.
The "Flexible Core" invented by him in 1993 was a great
contribution to Suona history. It solved the problem in Suona’s
playing of complicated modulations and temporary inflexions. It
allows Suona, a folk instrument, to play in large
modern orchestras, and greatly broadening the expressive
force of this instrument.
In 1998, he performed at the State Banquet welcoming President
Clinton’s visit to China. Started in 1999, he served as
the principal suona of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and
became the figured soloist. In April 2007, Hong Kong
Chinese Orchestra presented him in a large scaled sold-out
concert titled "Guo Yazhi’s
Wind Music World-Legend of Suona" at Hong Kong Cultural
Center Concert Hall.
In July 2012, the Orchestra presented him in another
concert titled "Guo Yazhi’s Wind Music World 2-Raising the Bridal Sedan
and Welcoming the Bride" . His talent and deep expression was
enthusiastically received with critical acclaim. Yazhi has appeared
many times on CCTV. His performances changed people’s attitude
towards the "folk" instrument Suona. He is a versatile and
charismatic player. Apart from the Suona, he can also play
saxophone, clarinet, piccolo, flute,
pipe, sheng, ocarina, cucurbit flute, and even ‘leaf’.
THE
MUSIC OF PIANIST & COMPOSER LEO BLANCO......pulses with global
rhythmic elements influenced equally by his South American roots
and European classical traditions interwoven with improvisatory
developments.
Blanco was born in the Venezuelan Andes where he absorbed folk
music genres that were a mix of Afro-Caribbean, North American
and European musical styles. By age eleven he was a violinist in
the Merida Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 1996, his interest in
world music and jazz brought him to Boston’s Berklee College of
Music and he later earned a Master’s Degree in Composition at
New England Conservatory.
In 1997 Blanco became the first Latin American to win to the
prestigious Boston Jazz Society Award. The next year, he
received the Billboard Grant Award for his commitment,
achievement and contribution to society through music.
Currently, he is a faculty member at Berklee College of Music.
Blanco has shared the stage with major international jazz
artists including Terence Blanchard, Pat Metheny, Chucho Valdez
(Irakere) and Joao Bosco. He has performed at numerous festivals
including the Montreaux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival,
Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Edinburgh
International Festival and the Latino Festival and at the
Kennedy Center. Blanco has produced and composed four albums
under his name.
Chi Wei Lo
駱奇偉,
pianist and improviser
“Nervy,
cerebral, passionate, mysterious and sensual…Flowing, aloft, and at
the same time, grounded”
(BMInt), pianist and improviser Chi-Wei Lo can well and truly smash
the fourth wall. Having graduated from the Juilliard School under
Jerome Lowenthal and Hung-Kuan Chen, Lo enjoys interdisciplinary
collaboration and is expanding his creativity through different
performance formats. Lo is currently a doctoral candidate at the New
England Conservatory, majoring in contemporary piano improvisation,
where he was featured in a video as the representation of virtuosity
in 2019.
Immediate major collaborators include: North American Medical
Orchestra, Longwood Symphony Orchestra, Pink Noise, Flower Pistils,
Counterpoint Ensemble and New Asia Chamber Society. Lo has also
collaborated with Benjamin Zander, Tyshawn Sorey, Yazhi Guo, Joe
Morris, Nan-Chang Chen, Jaehyuck Choi, Hao Huang, and Xiaopei Xu,
who Lo frequently performs in recent years as a piano duo.
Lo’s interdisciplinary performances have been presented by the
Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts, Harvard Musical Association,
Ukraine Forward, College Music Society, Lancaster International
Piano Festival, Tufts University, Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, UCLA,
Chinese American Museum (LA), Holland Music Sessions and German
Society Of Pennsylvania, to name a few.
In 2018, Lo was commissioned by the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit
Corporation (KRTC) for its 10 years anniversary, which led to the
album, Twelve Over Twelve, and the printing of Lo’s limited edition
metro-card.
His solo tours, The Dance of the Seven Deadly Sins, Declaration of
Aesthetics, Twelve Over Twelve, all included benefit concerts in
accord with the belief that musicians should give back to their
communities.

As
China's first generation violin performer and composer, Ma Sicong holds a
prestigues position in the history of modern Chinese music. In 1937, the
25-year-old Ma Sicong composed this violin piece "The First Rondo"
based
on the theme of a Suiyuan 綏遠
folk song "Farewell in Love 情別
". The combination of art and virtrosity in this piece also represents the style
of the many other works composed by Ma throughout his lifetime.
Rondo
No.1 uses the standard rondo form: A-B-A-C-A and an epilogue. This is also the
most neatly written violin piece in early Chinese music history. It reflects
Ma's rigorous and serious attitude in music making. In the main theme A, Ma
transformed the theme of the original folk song into a joyful, dancing, and
“violinish” tune; the first episode B expressed a humorous taste with a series
of lively sixteenth notes phrases. The open chords of the violin are more
radiant and powerful in the subsequent reappearance. The second part C is
beautiful in both melody and singing, and the fixed tone pattern of the piano
accompaniment is just like the group of camels in the wild west. At the second
reappearance of the theme A, both the violin and the piano raised an octave, to
become brighter with a hopeful light and heat.
Tonight's performance is a suona version arranged by Guo Yazhi. The traditional
suona cannot play music with complex tonal changes. However, Guo Yazhi would
like to make a bold attempt using the suona “flexible core” invented by him to
challenge this violin piece and broaden the the expressive power of suona.

Co-commissioned by Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Virginia Arts
Festival, La Jolla SummerFest, and Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, OR, the
duet Chinese Ancient Dances was written for and dedicated to David Shifrin and
Andre-Michel Schub for their national tour and the Alice Tully Hall concert on
May 7, 2004, in which the complete work was given the world premiere. The
premiere performance was dedicated to the celebration of the 70th birthday of
Prof. Mario Davidovsky, one of Chen Yi's mentors at Columbia University. The
work includes two movements: I. Ox Tail Dance; II. Hu Xuan Dance. The new
version was adapted for the suona master Yazhi Guo and will premiere at New
England Conservatory's Jordan Hall in Boston on Nov. 12, 2022.
It’s
said that in the ancient time, there is an ethnic group called Ge Tian Shi.
Three people would dance in slow steps with ox tails in their hands, while
singing eight songs to praise the earth, the totem of the black bird, the
plants, the grains, the nature, the heaven, the weather, and the flourishment of
breeding livestock. I got my imagination from the gestures of holding the ox
tails, and went into the atmosphere of composing the first movement Ox Tail
Dance.
The
second movement is entitled Hu Xuan Dance. There is a poem Hu Xuan Lady written
by the famous poet Bai Ju-Yi in Tang Dynasty, who described the Hu Xuan Dance in
detail. The energetic dance has continuing fast spinning gestures, introduced to
China from the West in the ancient time. I reproduced the image in the second
movement, the music is written vividly for the two instruments.
陳怡的《中國古代舞曲》原為單簧管與鋼琴二重奏曲,全曲分兩個樂章:第一樂章《牛尾舞》和第二樂章《胡旋舞》。此曲獲美國作曲家基金會的作曲委約獎金,由紐約林肯中心室內樂協會,佛幾尼亞國際藝術節和加州拉海拉夏季音樂節聯合委約並在2004年先後在三個城市首演。第一樂章是對遠古葛天氏的樂舞以三人為一組,操牛尾投足以歌《八闕》的想像。第二樂章是對白居易名詩《胡旋女》中所述西域傳入的胡旋舞之生動寫照。為嗩吶獨奏家郭雅志大師改編的新版本於2022年11月12日於波士頓新英格蘭音樂學院喬丹音樂廳首演。 - notes

The
first version of this work for orchestra was written during the spring and
summer of 2009. It was a commission by KlaraFestival Brussel International Music
Festival 2009, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the French
Community of Belgium. The premiere took place at the Great Hall of Flagey
Brussels, on September 1st,
2009, with Guo Yazhi, soloist, and the Symfonieorkest Van Vlaanderen, under the
direction of Tang Muhai 湯沐海.
Subsequently, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra commissioned a second version of
this work for Chinese orchestra. The premiere took place on July 15and 16, 2011, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, with Guo
Yazhi, soloist, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, under the direction of Tang
Muhai .
The
title consists of the first two words of each phrase borrowed from a famous poem
by the poet, Wang Wei 王維,

Dynasty, "From the vast Desert rises, straight, a solitary smoke; onto the great
Yellow River falls the round Sun". 大漠孤煙直,長河落日圓
This
piece is not a description or a musical interpretation of ancient poetry, but
rather the expression of an inner image of the composer's thought and reflection
on life. It is common practice to spread his own feelings and thoughts based on
background borrowed from poems.
When a
person faces the magnitude of the Desert, and endless rolling waves of the
Yellow River, besides praises and exclamations on natural phenomena, a
comparative inquiry into the meaning of life emerges. Through the ages, how many
writers have written repeatedly about the same feelings, but it has always been

A 2015
composition inspired on the music of Pigmy peoples in Africa. Often these
communities get into a communal trance by the same music they all perform
themself. Leo was inspired in this trance-like voices and wrote the Piano part,
which functions more as a layer of Percussive rhythmic counterpoint, while the
melody gives the sensation of been in a more relaxed pace, even though it is
mathematically in synch with the piano part.
YEMEN (Premier
For guanzi and piano)
Composed in 2019. Inspired on the traditional music of this Arab-Western-Asian
country (Yemen). As part of their folk music repertoire, Yemenis have
traditional rhythms to which they dance naturally to, while for the common
western ear conceives it as odd meter-based music. Written in 11/8 time
signature, a very un-common rhythmic pattern for most of the rest of the world,
I wanted to write this composition based on this folkloric rhythm of Yemen,
while making sure that beauty and simplicity was always above any sensation of
complexity or “odd-ness"
PERU
LANDO (Premier For guanzi and piano)
A
composition 2010 based in Afro-Peruvian music, mixing the rhythms that Peruvians
inherited from enslaved African inhabitants of Peru, with the airy and
meditative texture of the Traditional Andean flutes of South American, here
interpreted by Yazhi Guo on Chinese Guanzi. - Notes

Improvisation on a Theme of "Moonlight Over Spring River"

Originally a solo piece for pipa, Moonlight Over Spring River is one of the most
famous Chinese traditional music. In this performance, this piece will begin in
its piano version, and eventually merge into a structured improvisation. A
background of soft repeating notes open the curtain, mimicking the plunking of a
pipa, conjuring a quiet night on the spring river. They gradually speed up and
become prominent, chasing away the lake fog. At the same time, a melody
mimicking the bamboo flute plays on top, as if the winds carry through the tune
of a gondolier. The contrast between the two instruments- one producing
pellet-like short notes, and the other producing fluent drawn-out notes
represent different shapes of the river in the springtime; blooming flowers,
wrinkling waters, magnificent rock and trees….In the original, musical phrases
are repeated over and over, seemingly chasing one another. As the improvisation
begins, the elements described comes and goes, amplified and diminished,
combining and disappearing, separately and at the same time, all to create the
snow-looking moonlight, the fragrant river winds, the union of sky and water,
the lonely sailing man, the longing girl, and the feeling of nostalgia for
home……

of the Golden Snake ” is a well-known Chinese traditional song by Nie Er 聶耳
based on traditional folk melodies. I have performed this piece many times with
different arrangements including performing with Chinese traditional instrument
orchestra, and jazz band even in style of Jazz Bebop. In this concert, it
would be my honor to play it in Latin style with the amazing Latin Jazz virtuoso
Leo Blanco.
