The orchestra and chorus of this memorial concert are comprised of student
instrumentalists and vocalists from the New England Conservatory. The
student performers hail from all corners of the globe and the Chinese young
conductor L. Rhett Lei, who was born and raised in the region affected by of
the quake organized the entire event. This concert has an idea of
transfiguration. The Brahms tragic overture has the earth-shattering dynamic
and force, which seems to depict the unexpected catastrophe occurred in
Sichuan. Faure's Requiem is regarded as the sweetest and most celestial
requiem ever written. It is like the music sequel to the Brahms Tragic
Overture. The Requiem doesn't continue the chaos in the tragic overture, but
transfigures as it moves forward, eventually ending in perpetual peace. The
soloists for the Faure Requiem will be soprano Rachel Holmes and baritone
Anders Walker. The concertmaster, Etienne Espagne from France describes the
idea behind the concert: "The exciting thing about music is that it has
healing power and goes beyond language. We hope through our music-making to
honor the memories of those who have perished."
