cellist
Korean
cellist Jiyoung Lee is known for her passionate interpretations, musical
depth and sensitive performances. As a soloist, her performance credits
include such orchestras as Korea’s Seoul Symphony Orchestra, New York’s
Hudson Valley Philharmonic and New Jersey’s Bergen Philharmonic. An avid
chamber musician, she has played at numerous festivals, including
Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Music at Menlo, La Jolla Summer Fest,
Music From Angel Fire, Perlman Music Program, Sarasota Music Festival,
Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland, Seiji Ozawa Academy in
Switzerland, and the Great Mountain International Festival, Korea.
Jiyoung Lee’s recent performances includes chamber music concerts at
Caramoor’s Evning Rising Star Series where she collaborated with Pamela
Frank, and Peter Wiley. Other highlights include a premiere of Yoomi
Pack’s double concerto for viola and cello with string orchestra with
New York Classical Players, and a solo recital in Williams Hall at New
England Conservatory in Boston.
Highlights of her last season include a debut with Bergen Philharmonic
playing Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor in November, two recitals in
Wilson Theater and Paul Hall at the Juilliard School, and a performance
at Weill Recital Hall as the 1st Prize winner of the 2014 New York
International Artist Association Cello Competition. An active season for
chamber collaborations Jiyoung performed at New York City’s Fall for
Dance with the Orion String Quartet, violinist Cathy Cho and violist
Matthew Lipman, and at Caramoor Evning Rising Star Series with Shmuel
Askenazi. Moving into dance and theater realms, Lee worked with
choreographer, Nathan Madden at the Brooklyn Dumbo Dance Festival, and
participated in theatrical productions with the Ensemble for the
Romantic Century at BAM Fisher and at the American Institute for
Economic Research.
In addition to the New York International Artist Association Cello
Competition, Ms. Lee’s honors and awards include: winner, the Bergen
Philharmonic Young Artist Competition; 2nd Prize, the Alice and Eleonore
Schoenfeld Competition, Harbin, China; winner, The 2012 Juilliard
Schumann Concerto Competition; winner, the 2012 Hudson Valley
Philharmonic String Competition, and 2nd Prize, the 2012 Hellam Young
Artist Competition, Springfield, MO. Additional awards include First
Prize at the prestigious 2004 Korea Times Cello Competition, and first
prize at Korea’s 2004 Ehwa Press Competition.
Her recent solo performances include Lincoln Center’s Wednesday at One
series in Alice Tully, two solo recitals at New York City’s Harvard
Club, Korea Society, and as a soloist with the Hudson Valley
Philharmonic. Chamber music performances include appearances at Victoria
Hall in Geneva, Lincoln Center’s Wednesday at One series in New York,
Ravinia’s Steans Institute of Music, La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest,
the Perlman Music Program, The Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland,
and Music from Angel Fire.
Born in Seoul, Korea to a family of entrepreneurs, Jiyoung Lee studied
piano before turning to the cello. At 16 she made her professional debut
as soloist with one of Korea’s major orchestras, the Seoul Symphony
Orchestra. Following studies at the Seoul National University, Ms. Lee
moved to the United States in 2007 to study at The Curtis Institute of
Music with Peter Wiley, then cellist of the world renowned Guarneri
String Quartet. While at Curtis, Ms. Lee held the Joseph Druian
Fellowship, and was principal cellist of Curtis Symphony Orchestra in
her final year. She also attended The London Master Classes in Great
Britain, where she studied with Ralph Kirshbaum at Royal Academy of
Music in 2010, and 2013. In March 2013, she worked with David Geringas
in Interlaken, Switzerland. While earning her Master’s Degree at The
Juilliard School as a student of Timothy Eddy, she served as principal
cellist of the Juilliard Orchestra. She also received the prestigious
Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School studying with Joel Krosnick.
Currently, Jiyoung is pursuing her doctoral degree in Musical Arts at
the New England Conservatory with Laurence Lesser.
