Meet the artists:
Marvel Ang will be a junior at the Boston University Academy in September, 2004. He took
dulcimer lessons with Mr. Zhang Zheng Tian and later Ms. Ping Li, the principal dulcimer
player of the China Central National Orchestra of Traditional Music of Beijing. It is
under her guidance and expectation that Marvel achieves his present level of performance.
In 2002, Marvel visited Beijing, China and played at the China Music University and for
the Presidents of the International Dulcimer Association and Beijing Dulcimer Association.
Both gave Marvel very high commendation. Marvel has appeared frequently at various
community events receiving high remarks.
Sophie Hsuan-Fong Chen, 16, from Taiwan will be a tenth grader at Walnut Hill School this
September. She was the first prize winner of the 2003 National Oboe Competition in Taiwan
among many other honors. Earlier this year, she was one of the few to play in a master
class for Mr. Albert Mayer, the principal oboist of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and was
praised by him as
one with star quality.
Yi-Ting Chen, 18, from Taiwan will be a freshman at the National Taiwan Normal University
majoring in piano performance.
Tzu-Yin Chou, 15, was the 2nd prize winner of the Taiwan Baroque Viola Music Competition.
She is the principal violist of the Taipei County Youth Orchestra and have toured Malaysia
and Hong Kong.
Tina Ho is a residence of Boxborough, Massachusetts. She is the winner of this years
concerto competition organized by the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts. Tina was the
top prize winner of the New England Piano Teacher's Association, the Massachusetts Music
Teacher Association, and the New England Conservatory Concerto Competition. She graduated
from the New England Conservatory Preparatory program with honors in both theory and piano
performance. She is currently studying at the Northwestern University, double majoring in
piano and psychology. She studied with Ms. Sylvia Chambless, Mr. Angel Rivera, and Ms.
Jean Stackhouse at New England Conservatory, and with Prof. Alan Chow at Northwestern.
Caroline Liao, 16, was the first prize winners of both the 2001 and 2003 National Taiwan
Clarinet Competitions. She is double majoring in clarinet and piano.
Po-Yao Lin, 15, was a prize winner of the Taipei City Violin Competition. He studied both
violin and piano for over ten years.
Yu-Cheng Lin, 19, is a sophomore at National Taiwan Normal University, majoring in piano
and minoring in erhu. She was the first prize winner of the youth division in 2002
National Erhu Competition in Taiwan. She performed at New Yorks Lincoln Center with
the Wind-South Chinese Music Chamber Ensemble in 2001.
Jannie Lo, 18, began to learn the piano at the age of three. She is a sophomore at the
Peabody Conservatory of John Hopkins University under the guidance of Boris Slutsky. Her
past principal teachers include Mack McCray and Rui-Xing Li. She has participated in
numerous master classes by artists including Vladimir Feltsman, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Andre
Laplante, Jerome Lowenthal, Alexander Slobodyanik, and the Peabody Trio, among others.
Awards include first prizes from the Ross McKee Piano Foundation, the Pacific Musical
Society, the San Francisco Young Pianists Competition, and the Stravinsky Awards
International Piano Competition. From 2001-2003, she was keyboardist of the San Francisco
Symphony Youth Orchestra. She appeared in San Francisco Noontime Concerts since age ten,
and has performed with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra, and at the Junior Bach Festival. In
New York City, she appeared in a "Young Virtuosos" Gala Concert in the Weill
Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall. She has participated in numerous music festivals including
the Yellowbarn Summer Music Festival, Piano Summer in New Paltz (led by Vladimir
Feltsman), and most recently TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute in Forth Worth, TX.
Mann-Wen Lo, 14, from Taiwan will be a ninth grader at Walnut Hill School this September,
majoring in violin. She has performed numerous concertos in Taiwan with Taipei Symphony
Orchestra and Academy Taiwan Strings at Taiwan National Concert Hall. She was the second
prize winner of the 2002 First TOYAMA Asian Youth Musician Competition and has attended
the Fourth International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. She was awarded at
the 2004 2nd Treasury of Young Music by the Taiwan Council for Cultural Affairs.
David Ta-Wei Tsai, 15, just graduated from the Preparatory Junior High School of the
National Taiwan Normal University under the guidance of Rolf-Peter Wille. In 2003, he
appeared with the universitys orchestra as the soloist performing Webers
Concertino Op. 79.
Li-Hua Tseng received her BA from the National Taiwan Normal University majoring in cello.
She is a member of the Taipei City Symphony Orchestra and teaches full time at Hsinchu
High School in Taiwan.
Larry Weng ,16, is currently studying with Sylvia Chambless at the New England
Conservatory. He appeared frequently in Boston area, and at such renowned venues as New
England Conservatory's Jordan Hall. He has also won many awards and competitions,
including the first prize at the NEPTA competitions of 1999 and 2001, first prize at the
New England Concervatorys concerto competition, and fifth prize at the Fifth
International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians.
Eric Wu, 15, is a sophomore at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts, Houston,
TX., studying with Jeanne Kverman Fisher. He was the first prize winner of both the 2001
HMTA Piano Competition and the 2002 Brook Mays Summer Music Festival. He is a member of
the Rice University Preparatory School.
Cathy Kai-Chien Yang, 16, started piano at the age of five and oboe at nine. She is a
sophomore at Chung-Cheng High School, Taiwan.
The Concerts and Master Classes :listed are presented by the faculty members (see below),
guest artisits, and students of the 13th Annual Music Festival at Walnut Hill, organized
by the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts. This three-week program provides a rare
opportunity for talented young musicians to learn directly from world-renowned masters on
a one-on-one basis. It takes place every summer in August at Walnut Hill School, Natick,
MA.
