The Chung Yuan Christian University Faculty and Staff Choir
Program includes Art Songs, Folk Tones and church music.
The Faculty and Staff Choir of Chung Yuan Christian University was organized
in 1965 for the purpose of spreading goodwill through sacred music and for
the edification of it members. The Choir has performed at numerous schools,
churches, prisons, hospitals, and factories and for various important
occasions on campus, including all Commencements since 1983. Through the
years its repertoire has been expanded to include not only sacred works, but
also Chinese folk songs and famous traditional songs from various cultures,
sung in both Chinese and English.
In recent years the Choir has been invited to perform on the United States
west coast, in Japan, in Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia,
Malaysia, and Singapore, in the Chinese Mainland cities of Beijing, Tienjin,
and Xian, and throughout Taiwan and its neighboring islands.
The only one of its type in Taiwan, the Faculty and Staff Choir of Chung Yuan
Christian University has included most of the presidents, deans, department
heads, and professors in its ranks. For Commencement performances selected
students have been invited to augment the personnel to 100 voices. Although
Chung Yuan Christian University has no music department, the Choir has become
an important tradition on campus. Not all of its members have had formal
training in music, but all have become avid enthusiasts of music as an
avocation. Meeting for weekly rehearsals on campus, the Choir aspires to
sing for the glory of God and to spread peace, good cheer, friendship, and
seeds of the Gospel through music.
